Woodlawn Neighborhood: The Incredible Firehouse Restaurant

Firehouse Restaurant in the Woodlawn Triangle: My New Portland Favorite!

B Firehouse Restaurant

If you love localized, seasonal fare without pretension, then look no further. Walking into the Firehouse RestaurantB in the Woodlawn Triangle, everyone is warmly greeted by the gracious wait staff, the huge wood oven and typically by owner Matthew Busetto as he slices and plates his signature wood-grilled hanger steak. Or preps my favorite Firehouse meatballs. Or pulls the vegetarian friendly margherita pizza out of the oven. Here, everyone is genuinly engaged in what they do & with the loyal patrons that pack out the house!

Flavors to love:

  • Focused on central & southern Italian cuisine & wine with produce from local farms
  • All of the entrees are incredible (Good luck getting past the meatballs!)
  • Enjoy a side of the crispy potatoes with lemon, garlic and grana padano–you’ve never tried anything like them.
  • Order up a glass of house made lemon/lime soda (Seriously. It’s amazing.)
  • Indulge in the best Tiramisu Semifreddo in town–be sure to scrape all the chocolate underneath everything else!

Located in the center of the NE Portland Woodlawn neighborhood, Michael and Elizabeth turned a run down dilapidated firehouse (Engine 29) into one of the city’s best foodie secrets. In 2007, Matthew & Elizabeth Busetto were just looking for space for Elizabeth’s Dekum Family Health Naturopathic practice.B When Matthew walked into the old building, the first thing that went through his mind was “this place needs a wood oven”.B B B After ten months of hard demolition work and with an eye for reclaiming all the wood–this favorite hot spot opened up!

  • The breads, pastas and sausages are all made on site with many an addition directly from the garden just outside.
  • Wood oven & wood grill & rotisserie creates food and flavors that are simply amazing.
  • The wood tables and benches is all wood that was reclaimed during the demo process!
  • And I love this even more–Matthew & Elizabeth are passionate about the Woodlawn Children’s Garden which provides after-school programs for kids. Run by Mara Reynolds, this program is a wonderful addition to the whole neighborhood. Firehouse Restaurant supports and promotes this worthy cause—keeping funds and focus right where they do business. Love it!B
  • The second floor provides private dining for 44 sit-down style or 100 for a reception.
  • While you don’t have to have reservations, they certainly help. Click here to make them!
  • 711 NE Dekum, Portland OR
  • Coffee roaster is of course Stumptown
  • And as always, please tell Matthew & his team that ‘Claire’ sent you!
