Located in the Cedar Mill neighborhood in Northwest Portland, walking into Poppa’s Haven Coffee House is like walking into someone’s livingroom! Owned and run by Jerry & Jane (also known as Poppa Jerry & Momma Jane) the past two years, it is cozy, warm and oh-so-welcoming. And may I just say, they still had eggnog so I veered away from the weekly cappuccino and went for the eggnog latte. It was absolutely the best one of the whole season!
Jerry told me that searching for the best coffee out there (They landed on Sleepy Monk Coffee RoastersB for many reasons, two of which = organic and fair trade.) took him six years. Jane and JerryB said that thenB the “Monks”B interviewed THEM to see if they were really going to be the best coffee shop for their incredible beans.B J&J passed the test– then Sleepy Monk trained and trained them so that they would know by sight and sound only when it was the perfect pull. No thermometer. No gauges. That’s talent.
By the way, if you love lore….Legend has it that when coffee made it into the trade routes, the monks grabbed hold of it to keep them awake during vespers. But to be clear, Sleepy Monk Roasters aren’t monks….
The espresso is so good at Poppa’s that their most popular drink is a 16oz plain latte. No flavors, just good coffee! Other top drinks are the Mayan Mocha (secret recipe) & the Dirty Hippie (Chai, Hemp milk and dble shot of espresso). In the summertime, you’ll need to try the Gunpowder Smoothie with milk, chocolate, espresso and ground espresso beans (that’s the gunpowder part).
Treats and savory items are created by Wild Rune Bakery with as many organic products as possible. Tea’s are from local Portland company Fox Fire–also organic.
